Schools' Concerts
In these days of instant electronic media it is all too easy to lose sight of the importance of live performance. The nmo takes orchestral concerts into individual schools' own halls to enhance the musical, educational and cultural life of each child.
The 50-minute programme is performed by a 15-piece orchestra, introduced by the conductor/presenter in a lively and challenging manner. The emphasis is on informality, using stories, visual aids, demonstrations and interaction.
Pupils are encouraged to participate in the performance through singing and/or playing instruments. A choice of programmes, according to age, is offered.
These hugely popular concerts, coupling education with entertainment, seek principally to provide an experience of professional music-making as part of the daily life of tomorrow's audiences.
Academies
For young musicians who have already shown talent and the ability to develop it, the nmo runs academies in which they can rehearse and workshop alongside professionals for a day, concluding with a public concert.
These have proved highly successful, especially when the results can themselves be taken into schools to show what children are able to achieve with diligence and dedication. Inspiration for young people of all ages - and for the professionals!
